Bloating After 40: Why Your Stomach Pooches Out (Hint: It's not fat)

You wake up. Your tummy is flat. Okay — flat-ish.

By 3 PM, you look five months pregnant!

You didn't eat that much. You didn't do anything wrong. But there it is. The pooch.

I want to tell you something, woman to woman:

That pooch is probably not fat.

Here's how you know. Fat is slow. Fat takes months to show up. Fat does not appear between breakfast and lunch.

But your pooch? It changes by the hour. Flat in the morning. Big by dinner.

Fat can't do that. Bloat can.

So what is bloat?

Your belly is full of tiny living helpers. Trillions of them. They are good bugs, and their job is to break down your food.

After 40, your hormones start to shift. When hormones shift, your gut changes too. Food moves slower. The good bugs get out of balance. And when the bugs struggle, they make gas.

Gas takes up room. Your belly puffs out to make space.

That's the pooch. It's not fat wearing a fat costume. It's air and a struggling gut.

Why this is good news

You can't shrink fat by dinnertime. But bloat? Bloat can calm down when you take care of your gut.

That means the answer is not more crunches. It's not eating less. It's feeding your good bugs what they need — mostly fiber — so they stop making so much gas.

Try this today

Put on your normal pants in the morning. Notice how the waistband feels. That's your 8 AM belly.

Now check again at 3 PM. Same pants. Same you.

Are they tighter? Leaving a mark on your skin?

Your weight didn't change today. Fat can't grow in seven hours.

But your belly did change. That's bloat — and now you have proof.

Tomorrow

So now you know what the pooch really is. But here's the question I bet you're asking:

Why did this start after 40? What do I do about it?

That answer surprises almost every woman I tell.

That's tomorrow's post.

This post is for learning, not medical advice. If your belly stays swollen all day, every day, or hurts — please see your doctor.
